Wet weather road safety message

Police

Police are warning all Territory motorists to drive with care following the heavy downpours endured in the NT within the last 24 hours and predicted for the coming days.

In Darwin there have been two downed power lines, a set of traffic lights out on the Stuart Highway and two minor car crashes this morning due to the wet weather conditions and police urge all drivers to take the following precautions.

Slow down and drive to the conditions. Other drivers' level of visibility, attention span and whether their cars are in good repair and have good tyres are all unknown. Vehicles will kick up spray, obstructing a clear view of what is ahead. When driving in the rain therefore, other vehicles should be followed at a distance three times larger than when the road is dry.

Be extra cautious in general as wet surfaces can be unpredictable. Obstacles like downed power lines, tress and other debris may be on the roads.
Utilise headlights, not only for your own visibility but also for others.
Check your car tyres regularly to ensure they have adequate tread and are inflated correctly.

If you are planning a long distance trip, be sure to check the weather and road reports before you depart.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting more squally rain within the next 24 hours. For further information relating to weather please visit http://www.bom.gov.au/
