Concern for welfare – Katherine – Update 1

Police

Katherine Police have called off the search for two people who allegedly walked off a walking track in Katherine Gorge on Saturday.

Superintendent Danny Bacon of the Arnhem and Western Division said an unidentified male rang the Katherine Information Centre, stating that he and his partner had become disorientated after leaving a walking track.

“Rangers and Police conducted a search of the Katherine Gorge walking tracks on foot, followed by an aerial search with a helicopter,” Superintendent Bacon said.

“The search was called off yesterday afternoon, as although Police and Rangers conducted extensive searches, the couple were unable to be located.

“There is a distinct possibility the couple reoriented themselves with walking tracks and made their way safely out of the park.

“Following a number of extensive searches NT Police have conducted recently, I again urge people to take the necessary precautions before setting off on an adventure.

  • Be sure to let people know where you are going and when to expect you back
  • Check the weather before you leave
  • Take adequate food and water supplies
  • Equip yourself with necessary maps and guides
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

“If the alarm is raised in relation to your whereabouts and you’re able to locate your bearings and find your way out of the area, please be sure to alert authorities. "Investigations are ongoing and if further information comes to hand, the search may be reinitiated.”
