Fatal Crash - Millner

Police

A 50-year-old woman has died following a collision between a bicycle and a vehicle yesterday afternoon.

The woman sustained life threatening head injuries when her bicycle collided with a Hyundai Getz on McMillans Road at around 1:00pm.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant John Worrall of the Major Crash Investigation Section said it appears the woman was travelling on the road against the direction of the traffic flow.

“It is believed the man driving the vehicle attempted to brake and veer to avoid her, however was unable to prevent a collision with the victim,” Sergeant Worrall said.

“Indications at this stage are that the cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.  While there are circumstances in the NT where cyclists are not required by law to wear a helmet, Police would encourage all cyclists to wear one whenever they are riding”.

“Investigators from the Major Crash Investigation Section will conduct an investigation into the cause of the crash and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

“Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it, who has not yet contacted Police, to phone 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000”

This takes the NT road toll to 35 compared to 24 for the same period last year.
