A Darwin man is due to appear in court after Northern Territory Police arrested him and laid scores of charges.

Superintendent James O’Brien said the man, 37, will answer 39 charges relating to car break ins and theft at the Casuarina Coastal Reserve and the Charles Darwin University from late November to earlier this month.

“On these occasions Police allege the man smashed windows of vehicles parked at the areas before removing items of value, including phones, iPods, wallets, sports equipment and cameras,” Superintendent O’Brien said.

Police also recovered tens of thousands of dollars in stolen property from a house the man was frequenting, Superintendent O’Brien said.

“Police have so far recovered around $20,000 in stolen property with scores more items of suspected stolen property that requires further investigation,” he said.

“Police allege that damage caused during the thefts was around $6000.”

Superintendent O’Brien said the arrest should allay community fears about parking at popular leisure spots. However he reminded people to take care of their personal affects.

“I would like to reassure the community that Police worked proficiently to identify the issues and catch an alleged offender,” Superintendent O’Brien said.

“People should always feel safe to park their vehicles at the Casuarina Coastal Reserve, however I yet again remind people to ensure they don't leave valuables in their vehicles at any time when it is left unattended.  Leave your valuables at home.”

The man was charged with:

Criminal damage (x12);

Trespass on premises (x12);

Stealing (x13);

Obtain property by deception, and;

Possess dangerous drug (cannabis).

The man was bailed to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 2 April.
