Operation Perceptor sweeps through town

Police

Police arrested 14 people, tipped out almost 500 litres of alcohol and took 38 people into Protective Custody during Operation Perceptor’s three week sweep through Darwin.

Sergeant Robert de Vos from the Darwin Social Order Unit said the operation targeted offenders in Darwin and surrounding suburbs and was established to reduce the impact of alcohol and substance related anti social behaviour throughout the CBD.

“The taskforce was made up of Police from Darwin Metropolitan Command, Mounted Police, Darwin Traffic Operations as well as a number of other agencies and ran from Monday 27 August to Friday 14 September,” Sergeant de Vos said.

“Police also issued 82 Infringement Notices for liquor, drug and traffic offences and a further nine were issued with Summary Infringement Notices.

“Police issued 46 Loitering Notices, 8 Trespass Notices and moved on 618 people. Members tested the speed of 3,680 cars and issued 20 Driving Infringement Notices. Seven random breath testing station were also established, resulting in three people returning positive results.

“It is well documented that the consumption of alcohol and other substances is closely linked to anti social behaviour. The operation focused on monitoring licensed establishments, as well as conducting high visibility patrols.

“Although this operation has come to an end, I urge people to continue to drink and act responsibly at all times.  Further operations are planned in the coming weeks to continue the focus on combating anti social behaviour.”
