RBT Lockdown - Darwin CBD - Update

Police

Police tested over 3000 motorists and arrested three drink drivers on Friday night, following a campaign to detect and apprehend drink drivers in Darwin’s CBD.

The city was in lockdown between 3:00pm and 1:00am with random breath test (RBT) stations set up on all arterial roads out of the city.

Senior Sergeant Kerry James said of the three arrests made, the highest breath alcohol content was recorded by a male who returned a reading of 0.204%.

“A male driver was arrested after he drove through a RBT for a second time, returning a medium range breath alcohol content of 0.103%. The offender had been issued with a Notice To Appear at an RBT earlier in the evening for returning a low range breath alcohol content and driving unlicensed,” Senior Sergeant James said.

“Police summonsed three motorists and issued 35 fines for unregistered vehicles, failure to wear seatbelts and exceeding low range breath alcohol content.

“We hope that the high Police presence makes drivers think twice about getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

“Our aim is to reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our roads by educating drivers on road safety.

“There was a noticeable increase in Sober Bob drivers throughout the evening, so it appears the message is being received.

"Police worked hard throughout the operation and in doing so, hopefully sent a message home to other would-be drivers contemplating getting behind the wheel whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
