Sexual assault - Call for witnesses - Katherine

Police

Detectives from the Northern Investigation Section are calling for public assistance following a reported sexual assault that occurred on Sunday night in Katherine.

Detective Sergeant Andy Bedwell said a 46-year-old female was allegedly attacked and sexually assaulted by a 38-year-old male between 6.00pm and 8.30pm on Sunday evening.

“The incident occurred in parkland adjacent to the intersection of Giles Street and Railway Terrace. This area is opposite the small park locally known as ‘50 Cent Park’,” said Detective Sergeant Bedwell.

“The female victim was able to escape her attacker and ran to a nearby phone where she contacted Police on triple zero.

“The 38-year-old man was located and arrested by Police shortly after in the vicinity of where the alleged assault took place.

“The man was subsequently charged yesterday with one count of sexual intercourse without consent and one count of aggravated assault. He was remanded in custody to appear in the Katherine Magistrates Court today.

“This incident appears to be a random attack and the two were not known to each other.”

Police are calling for public assistance and urge anyone who may have seen anything in the vicinity of Railway Terrace on Sunday night to contact Police on 131 444 or on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
