Update - Man Assaulted - Nightcliff

Police have charged a 19-year-old man in relation to an assault which occurred in Nightcliff on Monday night.

Superintendent James O’Brien said the man was charged yesterday, however Police continue to call on witnesses to assist further with the investigations and the identity of other possible perpetrators.

“The 43-year-old male victim remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition after it is alleged he was assaulted by a group of up to 20 people near the intersection of Casuarina Drive and Jacaranda Avenue,” Superintendent O’Brien said.

“Police will allege that the 19-year-old man stole the victim’s shorts in an attempt to steal his wallet.  He was apprehended at the scene and charged with assault a defenceless person, attempt to commit a crime – stealing, resist Police in the execution of duty and breach of a suspended sentence. He was bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on 9 November 2012.

“A 16-year-old male is also in custody assisting Police with their enquiries.

“Police have some very positive avenues of enquiry which are being investigated however we are still looking for the main perpetrator of this assault, so I ask anyone who may have information relating to the incident to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
