Police

Two people have died following a motor vehicle crash on Litchfield Park road yesterday.

Acting Superintendent Matt Parsons said emergency personnel were called to the scene just before 4:00pm.

"It is believed that three vehicles travelling in convoy failed to negotiate a bend in the road. One of the vehicles collided with a tree before catching on fire.

"Two back seat passengers aged 21 and 22 were able to escape with minor injuries. However, tragically the driver and front passenger died at the scene.

"Five passengers aged between 20 and 27 from the other two vehicles were treated for minor injuries and shock.

"Major Crash investigators remain on scene. The road and access between Wangi Falls and Tolmer Falls will also remain closed until 4:00pm today.

"Formal identification of the deceased is underway."

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

The Territory road toll now stands at 16.
