Arrest - Suspicious Bush Fires – Operation Paringa

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 27-year-old male in relation to Operation Paringa.

Operation Paringa was established in September 2019 to investigate suspicious bushfires occurring in the greater Darwin area during the year.

Detectives from Serious Crime Squad have collaborated with NT Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires NT to conduct extensive enquiries during this complex and protracted investigation to identify an alleged offender.

On 7 January 2020, Detectives from Serious Crime Squad executed two search warrants on residences in Darwin River. At the conclusion of these warrants the 27-year-old male was arrested.

The male has been charged with:

17 x Person cause a bushfire in accordance with S.244 Criminal Code Act (NT).

He has been remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Local Court on 8 January, 2020.

Causing a bushfire carries a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment.

NT Police want to reassure the community that all suspicious bushfires will be investigated and this serious criminal activity will not be tolerated. Assistance from the public is invaluable when investigating these incidents.
