Northern Territory Police have arrested a 31-year-old male for traffic offences following a vehicle pursuit overnight.
At about 8:00pm, police observed an unregistered and uninsured vehicle on Roystonea Avenue. As police approached the vehicle, the 31-year-old driver allegedly took off at speed. Police engaged in a short pursuit which was terminated due to speed.
The vehicle continued to drive dangerously through surrounding suburbs before tyre deflation devices were deployed on Jenkins Road and the vehicle came to a stop.
A 24-year-old female and a 3-year-old boy were passengers in the vehicle during the pursuit.
A roadside breath test of the driver returned a positive result and he was arrested and conveyed to the Palmerston Watch House.
Breath analysis of the driver returned a reading of 0.119 BrAC. Police enquiries revealed he was also disqualified from driving.
The driver was charged with:
- drive a motor vehicle while disqualified
- drive at a speed in a dangerous manner
- drive medium range blood alcohol content
- drive uninsured motor vehicle
- drive unregistered motor vehicle
- driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner pursuit
- fail to obey direction of police officer
- recklessly endangering life
He will appear in Darwin Local Court today.
Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said “Police attended a number of jobs last night involving reckless driving behaviour. It’s disappointing to see that some people have a clear lack of respect for Territorian’s lives.
“With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and increased road use, people can expect to see more police on the roads.”
