Cybercrime offences - Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police are investigating cybercrime offences involving the attempted theft of more than $50,000 from several Northern Territory Businesses.

Detective Sergeant Craig Windebank said, “Fake emails that appear to contain legitimate invoices or directions to make payment are being sent to businesses, including instructions to send funds to a direct bank account. The emails are difficult to distinguish and are often quite sophisticated.

Fortunately, quick action was taken and some of the funds have been recovered.

To help protect your personal or business accounts ensure the following:

  • Have good business practices
  • Confirm large payments or changes to payments through a phone call
  • Ensure business systems are up to date and secure

“The internet is an integral part of our modern lifestyle but at the same time we need to be aware of the risks and take steps to be safe while online. This is a warning that online offenders continue to target Northern Territory businesses.”
