Road safety – Operation Roland

Police

Northern Territory Police will be tackling poor driving behaviour with a Territory-wide operation kicking off this week.

Operation Roland commences this Thursday (17 December 2020) and runs through to 7 January 2021.

“It’s been a tough year for everyone with COVID-19 restrictions and we can appreciate people will be out and about celebrating this festive season,” Acting Superintendent Paul Faustmann said.

“We do ask that people do it responsibly and don’t drink and drive.

“Despite having fewer visitors to the Northern Territory this year, the number of lives lost of NT roads has been consistent with previous years.

“What we wish for the most this Christmas, is the community spending it with their loved ones, and our officers and emergency service crews not responding to a fatal or serious crash.”

Territorians can expect police to be raising awareness of road safety issues, such as drink/drug driving, fatigue, speeding, distraction and unsafe and illegal driving behaviour.

“Police will be conducting random breath and drug testing mobile stations throughout the campaign at various locations including major towns and rural and remote locations.

“Drivers shouldn’t become complacent as you can be pulled over at any time during the day or night for a random test. Plan ahead, ensure you have a Sober Bob if you’re going to be drinking and please do not put yourself or others at risk by getting behind the wheel after drinking.”
