Northern Territory Police conducted multiple traffic campaigns in the Victoria Daly region over the weekend.

Between Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June, police checked approximately 40 vehicles. A number of those vehicles were found to be unregistered, overloaded, and unroadworthy. One youth was allegedly found to be driving unlicensed and thirteen people were not wearing seatbelts.

A 52-year-old man was arrested for medium range drink driving and driving unlicensed on Friday after he returned a positive alcohol reading of 0.146. The man was detected driving unlicensed for a second time the next evening. He was issued with two notices to appear in court for drive unlicensed and drive medium range.

Approximately 20 people were detected committing traffic violations for which infringements will be issued.

Police conducted several vehicle searches which located six small deal bags, five ounces of cannabis, and 14 large buds of cannabis. 11 bottles and 14 cans of alcohol were also seized.

Approximately 60 people in 15 vehicles bound for a community were directed back to their home community after the vehicles they were travelling in were found to be in need of repairs or registration.

Remote Sergeant Gary Palmer said it was concerning that some unlicensed drivers were youths who were allegedly directed to drive by intoxicated adults.

“A number of cautions were issued in a bid to have community members comply with road safety requirements. Fortunately, we were able to educate those involved which we hope will make our remote roads safer for everyone.

“The traffic campaign and subsequent seizure of alcohol and drugs will have a significant impact on lessening violence in Victoria Daly communities. Anyone with information on the importation if illicit substances in remote communities is urged to contact police on 131 444”.
