Vehicle crashes – Palmerston

Police

Northern Territory Police have arrested two drivers following two separate vehicle crashes on Friday 21 February 2020.

At 8:22am, a vehicle heading inbound to Palmerston allegedly drove through a red light at the intersection of University Avenue and Roystonea Avenue then collided with a second vehicle. The second vehicle rolled and landed on its roof.

A 21-year-old male driver tested positive for THC at a roadside drug test and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for further checks. He was later issued with a notice to appear in court for disobey red traffic light and driver with prohibited drug in blood.

Senior Sergeant Angela Stringer said, “In addition to the offences, the driver of the offending vehicle had two children inside his vehicle. The incident could have been much worse if the children were not in adequately installed child safety seats.”

The second incident occurred on Temple Terrace at 7:10pm on Thursday 20 February. A vehicle mounted a curb and drove into a boundary fence before hitting a steel pole attached to a house. The impact of the car ripped the pole out of the ground. There were four occupants in the vehicle including a heavily pregnant female. Police conducted a road side alcohol breath test on the 38-year-old female driver which returned a positive reading of 0.138.

Senior Sergeant Angela Stringer said, “The past two weeks have been a terrible time on NT roads. People need to wake up and stop having a cavalier attitude towards safety on the road. Cars can be a lethal weapon in the wrong hands. Anyone who speeds, drives without due care, or is under the influence of drugs or alcohol should not be on our roads”.
