More than 60 litres of alcohol destined for secondary sale was seized by Northern Territory Police following a tip off from a community member in Tennant Creek at the weekend.

On the evening of Saturday 17 April police in Tennant Creek were notified by a member of the public of a residence in an Alcohol Protected Area allegedly selling alcohol.

Tennant Creek Police executed a search pursuant to the Liquor Act 2019, during which they located 66 litres of alcohol hidden under clothing and blankets inside the house.

Senior Sergeant Crispin Gargan said the alcohol was likely to have come from people trafficking alcohol across the border.

“This alcohol has likely been imported by grog traffickers from interstate,” said Snr Sgt Gargan

“We cannot know how many assaults and domestic and family violence matters Tennant Creek Police have proactively negated in the actions of seizing this alcohol,”

“Those who seek to profit from such misery and harm should consider the criminality of their actions and their moral community responsibility.”

Inquiries to identify the owner of the alcohol continues. The offence of Sale of Liquor not authorised by licence carries a maximum penalty of 300 penalty points or imprisonment for three years.
