Assault - Karama

Police

Northern Territory Police have charged a 26-year-old man with assault after an incident in Karama last week.

At around 8pm Friday 1 January, a taxi driver observed a vehicle in front of him breaking heavily. The taxi driver flashed his lights before driving away.

The first vehicle then followed the taxi to a local shopping centre carpark where the man allegedly approached the taxi with a machete. The taxi driver called the police and the alleged offender fled the scene.

After further investigations, the 26-year-old was located and charged with:

  • assault a person
  • threat to kill
  • possess/carry/use control weapon at night

He was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on 17 February 2021.

Senior Sergeant Angela Stringer said, “It is disappointing to continually see certain people in our community conducting themselves this way. Taxi drivers are there to help people who don’t have their own transport and to be targeted like this is deplorable.”
