A man has been charged in relation to the death of a youth following a large disturbance in an East Arnhem community earlier this week.

Police responded to a disturbance in the remote community of Yirrkala where three people were injured and a 16-year-old male youth died on Wednesday afternoon.

Three men were medivaced to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment where they remain in a stable condition.

Following advice from people in the community, a 49-year-old man handed himself into police near Nhulunbuy late Friday afternoon.

He has today been charged with one count of Murder and is scheduled to appear before the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday 4 May, 2021.

Assistant Commissioner Michael White said he thanked the community for their cooperation and patience with police during this difficult time.

“Police will continue to work with community members and urge anyone with information which may assist, to come forward.”
