Arrest - Officer assault – Nightcliff

Police

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 45-year-old man in relation to assaulting a member of the police force.

Yesterday morning, police were called to a domestic violence incident on Progress Drive, when an unrelated fight between two men occurred in a nearby car park.

One man was taken into protective custody when he allegedly started throwing punches at the officer, causing injuries to his face.

St John paramedics attended and conveyed the 45-year-old to Royal Darwin Hospital for medical assessment after he suffered a medical episode.

Superintendent James O’Brien said: “The officer sustained bruising and swelling to his face, and it’s simply not acceptable.

“Police shouldn’t be assaulted, period. Especially when they’re in attendance to an incident where people have engaged with violence, and their role is to prevent anyone being injured.”

The man has since been bailed to appear before Darwin Local Court on 4 October 2022.
