Northern Territory Police have arrested 2 youths after a woman woke up to find intruders in her bedroom in the early hours of yesterday morning.

After being disturbed about 4:00am the woman turned on a light and found there were 2 youths, a 15 and 16 year-old, in her room who had accessed it through an unlocked sliding door.

The 16-year-old youth, who was armed with a large edged weapon, told the woman they wanted “money and jewellery”.

The woman watched from her bed as the youths searched her room for about 10 minutes before they stole a coin jar and an amount of cash in US notes.

The woman, who had pulled her blanket over her head and started to scream, was then allegedly struck a number of times through the blanket with the edged weapon, which caused abrasions and bruising to her forearm.

The woman continued to scream, which woke her housemates and the youths ran from the property.

The woman’s housemate saw the offenders nearby the Moil residence and called Casuarina Police who responded to the incident and established a crime scene.

Strike Force Trident members then door knocked the area, canvassed for CCTV footage that may have been recorded and reviewed police incidents from the night.

The identity of the youths was established as a result and the pair were arrested later in the morning.

Following the execution of a search warrant investigators located the quantity of US bank notes and the edged weapon allegedly used in the attack.

The youths had also been captured on CCTV trespassing on another northern suburbs property and stealing a quantity of alcohol from the premises earlier in the morning.

The 16 year-old has been charged with:

• trespass on premises
• stealing
• aggravated robbery
• aggravated unlawful entry - dwelling
• youth serious breach of bail

The 15-year-old has been charged with:

• trespass on premises
• stealing
• aggravated robbery
• aggravated unlawful entry – dwelling

The pair will face court today.

Detective Sergeant Senior Mark Bland reminded Territorians to remain vigilant when it comes to security.

“This offence highlights the importance of keeping doors and windows locked overnight, even if there are people in the house.”
