Charges – Dangerous Driving - Darwin

Northern Territory Police have charged a man in relation to a dangerous driving incident in Darwin on Saturday.

At around 8:45am, police apprehended a vehicle driving 123km/h in a 60km/h zone on Gilruth Avenue, Mindil Beach. The 44-year-old man returned a positive test for methamphetamine.

Police have since charged the man with:

  • Drive at a speed and manner dangerous
  • Drive with prohibited drug in blood

He was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on 7 December 2022.

In a separate incident at 12:30am on Saturday, two vehicles were seized after they were caught racing on the Stuart Highway, Yarrawonga. One driver was issued with a Notice to Appear for driving offences. The second driver tested positive for alcohol and was arrested at the scene.

Sergeant Gregory Lamb said “This is incredibly dangerous behaviour that put the whole community at risk and could have very easily ended in tragedy.

“As we come into the Christmas season NT Police are reminding all motorists to be aware of the fatal five: speeding, fatigue, seatbelts, drink/drug driving and distraction.

“Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving is urged to contact police on 131 444 for any emergencies contact 000.”
