Police in Tennant Creek arrested a suspected drug driver last night, who was subsequently found in possession of a large amount of fireworks.
An officer conducting Point of Sale Intervention (POSI) duties observed the 31-year-old man at a liquor store who smelt strongly of cannabis.
After the man left the store, police apprehended him in his vehicle for a roadside drug test, which returned a positive result for cannabis. Police arrested him for the purpose of further testing and also conducted a search of the man’s vehicle, locating a small amount of cannabis and five suitcases containing a very large quantity of fireworks.
The man was issued a notice to appear for:
- Drive with prohibited drug in blood
- Possess Schedule 2 drug – not traffickable
He was also issued a $1660 infringement notice for the possession of fireworks outside the approved period.
Superintendent Mark Grieve said, “We estimate this man was travelling with around $5000 of illegal fireworks. Possession of fireworks became an offence at midday on Monday and we urge anyone who has unspent crackers to hand them in to police now or risk a substantial fine.
“This was great work by the Tennant Creek team, who followed their training and their instincts, and removed a large amount of illegal product from the streets.”
