Northern Territory Police are calling on motorists to take more responsibility for themselves and their children after several incidents of concern on the weekend.
In one instance, a 38-year-old man will be facing the courts after he was stopped for a random breath test in Darwin on Friday night.
Superintendent Peter Malley said, “After the man returned a positive roadside test for alcohol, police also observed an unrestrained infant in the back seat between two adults. The driver was arrested and later retuned a blood alcohol reading of 0.225.”
The man was charged with:
- Drive high range blood alcohol content
- Provide false details
- Drive with a child unrestrained
- Drive while disqualified
Also on Friday night, members from Darwin Traffic Operations apprehended a speeding motorist.
“The 28-year-old male was travelling with two unrestrained children in the rear of the vehicle, hidden in the footwell beneath a towel,” said Supt Malley.
The man had a Warrant of Apprehension and was subsequently arrested. He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Monday 4 July.
“This driver behaviour is disgraceful. Children are our most precious assets, and to put their innocent lives at risk through this sort of reckless disregard for safety is beyond belief.”
