Firefighters Tackle Central Australian Bushfires

Fire and Rescue

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) have extinguished multiple grass fires across Alice Springs.

Yesterday afternoon, a large bushfire was reported in the vicinity of Colonel Rose Drive and Schaber Road, Alice Springs. A Watch and Act was issued advising those in the area to take action to protect their family and property as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze after establishing extensive containment lines.

12 Volunteer and Career Firefighters were on the ground for several hours before the fire was controlled. They continued to work into the night to ensure that the area was made safe, and the fire was fully extinguished.

Southern District Officer Stephen Hunter said “This blaze was incredibly close to nearby residences and I commend the work of all those involved in getting the fire under control.”

“The southern bushfire season has been extended until the end of April and forecasted fire weather conditions are indicating increased fire danger throughout central Australia over the coming weeks.

“NTFRS is continuing to urge residents in the central Australia to have survival plans in place and maintain firebreaks of at least 4m surrounding their properties. Firebreaks should be free from slashed or dead material and shouldn’t have any vegetation more than 50 millimetres high.”
