Northern Territory Police have arrested a 36-year-old male in relation to a stolen motor vehicle in Alice Springs yesterday.

The Victorian-registered vehicle was reported stolen from Dareton, NSW.

Around 7:45am, police received reports of a motor vehicle allegedly leaving without paying for fuel from a service station in Tennant Creek. The vehicle was monitored by local police as it headed south along the Stuart Highway.

A coordinated response from members of Strike Force Viper, the Dog Operations Unit, Drone Unit, Traffic, and General Duties allowed for the successful deployment of tyre deflation devices on the vehicle.

The vehicle came to a halt on the Stuart Highway south of Alice Springs, where police were able to quickly apprehend the male offender without incident.

The 36-year-old offender has been charged with Driving a Motor Vehicle without Consent, Theft, Drive Vehicle in Dangerous Manner and Enter Intersection against red light. The offender was remanded to appear in court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Budge said, “I commend the collaborative efforts of all involved to successfully bring this vehicle to a safe stop and apprehend the driver.

“This incident exemplifies the excellent policing work of our various units, including local police from other areas, and their steadfast dedication to protect and serve the community.”
