Northern Territory Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of two fatal crashes in the Top End.

The crash that occurred on Thursday on the Arnhem Highway near Jabiru resulted in the Toyota van involved catching fire.  Due to the extent of the fire, a Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team was deployed to scene to process and recover the human remains.

The DVI team are working with pathologists and the Coroner’s Office to formally identify the deceased who are believed to be two men from Darwin, aged 27 and 30 years of age.  Police have spoken with the families of both men.  A 20-year-old male rear passenger was able to self-extricate prior to the fire taking hold and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The crash that occurred on Friday on Melville Bay Road at Nhulunbuy involved a Holden utility and a pedestrian, who has been formally identified as a 29-year-old female from Nhulunbuy.  Police have informed her family.  The 25-year-old male driver is assisting police with enquiries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said “Sadly, 18 Territorians have lost their lives on our roads in the first 3 months of this year and it is believed that 95% are linked to alcohol or drugs.”

“We are imploring Territorians, whether you are a driver or a pedestrian, if you’ve been drinking or taking drugs – stay off the road.”
